A stunning Zuhair Murad Spring 2019 collection, presented yesterday at the Parisian Hôtel Potocki, features a kaleidoscope of flowing colors of the underwater world. Limitless horizon, sea creatures and mermaids seem to fascinate the Lebanese designer, portraying his fairytale vision of oceans— one that does not include wastelands and pollution. The richness of Murad’s ocean is seen through the skillful use of intricate embroidery techniques, combination of different beads, sequins and pearls. The ’80s- inspired silhouettes are refreshed with a modern flair. A rich palette of prismatic blue hues with organic elegance is refined, yet still modern.
Multilayered tulle gowns are embroidered with corals, and though each outfit is heavily embellished there is a sense of lightness and wearability. With the use of subtle ruffles, we discover an encounter between hues, textures and movements. “They evoke the feel of ripples on water”, said Murad. Slit slides, sensual figure-hugging silhouettes, sheer chiffon gowns, long trains, all in deep shades of blue, coral and black exude a very modern appeal. Literal reference of the ocean’s depth is best seen in prints depicting underwater scenery and silky fabrics so reflective that they literally resemble water. At the time when fashion reflects more than mere trends, Murad reminded us of the reality we live in.
