Chanel Cruise 2018: Grand Palais as Ancient Greece

After traveling the world in pursuit of the perfect backdrop for Chanel cruise collections, Karl Lagerfeld finally settled in Paris. Hamburg, Cuba, Rome, Dubai— to name a few— don’t come close to the Grand Palais, Lagerfeld’s home away from home. This time, he transformed this magnificent space into ancient Greek ruins and pillars. “The Modernity of Antiquity”, Chanel Cruise Collection 2018, was, as expected, inspired by picturesque Greek goddesses. The enchanting runway featured draped looks, one-shouldered silhouettes, gold detailing in form of delicate leaves, adorned headbands and the iconic double-C logo.

Just moments before the show, visitors gasped looking at an ancient temple, complete with crumbling ruins and Mediterranean greenery, including the olive trees. Along with the invitation, everyone received a practical guide to Paris. What a thoughtful surprise! As the runway lights turned on, it was obvious from the very second that the collection offered shift dresses in warm tones, toga-esque gowns, and bold knee-high gladiator heels offered in range of bright colors, from vibrant yellow to blue, red and black. In case you were wondering what happened with signature tweeds, they got a seasonal makeover, gilded and cinched at the waist. More Hellenistic in their essence, tweed looks were enhanced with bright baubles and beading. It was an authentic homage to ancient Greece, filled with elongated silhouettes and sheer, light fabrics. Some models carried circular handbags with gilded motifs, such as owls and olive leafs. If Karl Lagerfeld has mastered one thing, it is the art of aspiration— literally! In case you are planning to travel to Greece this summer, wearing pieces from this collection is the right thing to do.

In lieu of the upcoming Met Gala, the runway was missing Chanel regulars: Kendall Jenner, Cara Delevingne and Lily-Rose Depp. However, we got a glimpse of Hudson Kroenig, Lagerfeld’s 8-year-old muse. He strutted hand in hand with Lagerfeld and evoked a Grand applause, as one would only hope for.

P. S. Did I mention Karl got rid of the goatee? Hooray! There’ll be peace in the world of fashion at last.
