PFW: Giambattista Valli Spring 2018 RTW

This afternoon, Paris Fashion Week was treated to a runway of romance with Giambattista Valli Spring 2018 ready-to-wear show. Think billowing, feminine dresses, peek-a-boo lace detailing and sweet floral prints. Signature florals and frills got an edgy update. “It’s all about different expressions of personality. Individuality is key”, stated Valli before the show. The designer known for romantic aesthetics and couture finesse stole my heart many seasons ago. He is a genius when it comes to creating texture and adding depth into a dress or gown. Valli sends dreams down the runway, magical princess-worthy confections of lace, ruffles and floral goodness. Though I am not a ruffle person whatsoever, this collection makes me ruffle all season long. His Spring 2018 vision has a romantic, ethereal feel to it. In the spirit of “there is no such thing as too much lace”, Valli made lacing simply divine.

Large industrial windows and a raw, empty space at the Parisian 17th Arrondissement announced a change in Valli’s modus operandi. Known as a designer that prefers elegant venues, he switched things up by showing his new collection at a completely unexpected place. “I always build it up around a love story; I love this feeling of butterflies in the stomach,” said Valli as he greeted well-wishers backstage after the show. This season’s love couple? The opposites who attract. He combined printed denim sets with pleated dresses and skirts. Furry thong sandals represent a contrast to satin ballerina flats. Coquette minis create a perfect balance to more chunky pieces in the collection. Valli also made a clear statement that #FreeTheNipple movement is still very much alive. The sheer dresses were not giving the game away entirely, but they kept it fresh via flashes of bare skin. Valli girls, such as Rihanna, certainly approve!
