In a deep, never-ending floral sea of different prints, colors and bright shades, it is refreshing to discover a brand that is equally loyal to black and white in spring as it is in winter. Protagonist is a ready-to-wear collection that refines the modern wardrobe. Its design director, Georgia Lazzaro, using subtleties of form and fit, brings a new character to classic styles, resulting in versatile pieces that can be worn in a variety of ways, keeping the focus on the woman who wears them. Okay, she did do a twist with her first pre-collection for the brand, when she gracefully woke it up with intense color, such as cobalt blue and dusty pink, and played with subtle sensuality and versatility. However, I will not report on the ready-to-wear collection for Spring 2017 because I love color as much as Anna Wintour loves all-black outfits! I will focus on the resort collection, filled with simple cuts, flattering shapes and much (much!) loved black and white harmony.
Protagonist’s minimally driven elevated basics- elegant tailoring, liquid slip-dresses, jazzed up with measured details- are hard to argue with. They bring minimalism to a whole different level and they absolutely know their business! Cigarette pants, dresses with a deep V-neck (which you can wear in the back or in the front) and ever-loved stripes create a cohesive collection that will (surely!) be loved by many. Or, it already is?
What we witness in this collection is primarily a beautiful tailoring that stands out, followed by classic pieces that can be worn in (pretty much) every occasion. Find me a woman who will say no to a dress that can be combined with flats and heels in an equally elegant way. I dare you! Lazzaro also proposed sculptural jackets, growing knitwear offering, high quality execution and flawless design. Influential, indeed!
