Chanel no.5 2.0

You wouldn’t stroll into Chanel atelier and ask Karl Lagerfeld to remove tweed from future collections, or walk through Hermès and suggest renaming the Birkin bag. It would certainly take a lot of guts to question the world’s oldest and most known fragrance- Chanel no 5. But, there is one person who did it- Olivier Polge. Spoiler alert: It is more modern than ever, a true version 2.0.

You can think of him as the prodigal son in the world of perfumery. His father, Jacques Polge was Chanel’s master perfumer since 1978 (FYI, Ernest Beaux was the first one, who originally created the no. 5). This 40-year-old rejected the call for a while and focused on architecture, classical piano and graphic design before deciding to give a take on this legendary fragrance. In 2013 the officially took over his father’s job at the house of Chanel. The new visionary reinvented classic scents while breaking longstanding traditions. His take on Chanel no. 5 is the sexiest interpretation of the fragrance yet. It is a modern, fresh and vibrant embodiment of the now and forever scent. It features dynamic, crisp top notes of lemon, mandarin and orange. The emblematic heart of the bouquet unfolds with rose, jasmine and a new fraction of Ylang Ylang, more modern than ever. Behind the floral whirlwind lies an unprecedented sense of liveliness: the vibrant echo of cedar, accompanied by soft and cottony musk notes.

“I wanted to tell the story in a different way and with very contemporary aspects,” Polge stated in Grasse, France, where the brand unveiled the fragrance for the first time. “No. 5 is a pillar of our identity, and we produce it all year long,” explains Polge, who says he first smelled No. 5 when he was 4 years old. “So for any fragrance we create, [Chanel No. 5] is in the back of our mind and part of our sensibility.”

The new Chanel no. 5 L’Eau is available from September this year. “We all have in mind so many things about Chanel No. 5,” Polge added. “It’s a story that takes up so much space in our minds.” New face of the fragrance is Lily-Rose Depp. Following in the footsteps of Gisele, Marilyn Monroe, Nicole Kidman and Brad Pitt, this 16-year-old is in beautiful company. Well, of course she is. Her gene pool (parents Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis) wouldn’t have it any other way.
